Job description
The Master has absolute command of the vessel and has overriding authority over all aspects of its operation, at all times. Notwithstanding anything contained in any manual or other company instruction, in case of emergency the Master shall take such action as in their judgement, is necessary for the protection of life, property and the environment. The Master may request the Company’s assistance as may be necessary.
The Master’s role demands a figurehead position, and you will need to support the Company and crew in all matters, even those that fall outside your immediate responsibility. You are expected to take responsibility and be held accountable for the vessel and crew under your charge.
The Master forms part of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group Vessel Replacement Project Team and will be required to attend meetings by invitation.
Responsibilities
The vessel’s Master is responsible for:
- Line managing all onboard departmental heads (Chief Officer, Chief Engineer).
- Ensuring the safe and legal operation of their vessel throughout their period of duty.
- Implementing, managing, and maintaining the safety, security, and environmental policies of the company.
- Implementing, managing, and reviewing the safety management system on their vessel.
- Managing and maintaining documentation in relation to Company Instructions to Masters.
- Ensuring all vessel certificates are in date and renewed prior to expiry.
- Ensuring the vessel complies with legislative and commercial operational requirements to ensure vessel availability as per company requirements.
- Ensuring, as the ultimate authority, the safety of all passengers, crew and property and the protection of the environment in which the vessel operates.
- Ensuring the vessel performs required operations within company and port authority’s requirements. Optimising turnaround time in port, ensuring the efficient freight handling operation on the quayside throughout the cargo loading and unloading sequence.
- Managing vessel related emergencies onboard in line with the policies of Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, as well as all applicable international & local rules/regulations.
- Ensuring the vessel is maintained to satisfy the requirements of class, flag state and port state control.
- Applying and promoting company health and safety practices for effective management of injuries and accidents on-board.
- Optimising the speed and fuel consumption of the vessel with effective passage/route planning.
- Evaluating weather and tidal conditions to assist in maintaining scheduling, keeping all stakeholders advised of potential disruptions.
- Managing shipboard resources to maintain efficient operations and discipline on board.
- Promoting effective communication amongst all stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of vessel operation with other group activities.
- Assisting with the scheduling and rotation of vessels crew, including travel arrangements when required, in line with the crew members contracts of employment and the requirements for efficient and flexible vessel operations.
- Mentoring and encouraging junior staff to facilitate their professional development and progression within the company.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Certificate of Competency (CoC) – Minimum 3000GT, near-coastal.
- ENG1 Medical.
- All STCW mandatory courses including updated refesher training, as required.
- Proficiency in Medical Care on Board including updated refesher training.
Desirable Qualifications/Skills
- Crisis Management (training can be given).
- Ship’s Security Officer (training can be given).
- Good, proven ship handling skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Good IT skills
