New Vessel Project – Commissioning Manager

The Company
The Company is seeking the appointment of a commissioning manager to start immediately who will be responsible for the build and delivery of Scillonian IV. This is an exciting opportunity for the appointed candidate to join our team in Vietnam and work in the final stages of the build programme. Scillonian IV will deliver significant improvements in sea link services to the Isles of Scilly.
The vessel is being built by renowned shipbuilder Piriou due to their technical knowledge and extensive experience in building similar vessels. The build commenced in June 2024 following an extensive design phase and securing the necessary funding through its lender Lombard NatWest. The vessel remains on track to be completed by September 2026.
The destination
Scillonian IV is being constructed in Piriou’s Vietnam yard located in Ho Chi Minh City.
Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is Vietnam’s largest city a bustling hub blending French colonial history with modern dynamism, known for its vibrant street life, French architecture, bustling markets and diverse cuisine.
Job role
The commissioning manager reports to the project manager who together are the owners representative responsible for the build and timely delivery of Scillonian IV. You will work together with the naval architects, Class society, MCA and shipyard management to represent the company’s best interests with the build of Scillonian IV, ensuring the vessel is delivered on time and within budget. You will ensure Scillonian IV meets the specification requirements and all statutory regulations.
The commissioning manager and project manager will provide continuous owners representation at the yard to verify the quality of work, compliance with the vessel specifications & designs and timeliness of the vessels build program.
The project manager and commissioning manager will work in consecutive rotation at the yard. The commissioning manager is expected to work a pattern of 8 weeks at the yard followed by 2 weeks leave. During this time, they can expect to travel for meetings with various stake holders.
In the absence of the project manager you will prepare monthly progress reports for the board of directors highlighting the build progress and any concerns together with mitigations & solutions.
Qualifications & Experience
- Strong background in marine engineering with extensive technical knowledge of modern ships
- Bachelor’s Degree / Diploma in Engineering / Chief Engineer Class 1 – III/2
- Previous management experience of new vessel build & rebuild projects / large refit projects
- Minimum of 2 years experience in a senior technical management position ashore, such as new build project manager, technical superintendent or vessel manager,
- The candidate should be able to demonstrate a proven track record to deliver engineering projects on time and within budget
- Good communication skills, with the ability to promote cooperation and collaboration of the various stake holders to achieve timely and efficient delivery of the project.
- Experience of using project management software such as MS Project.
- Good knowledge of Classification society, IMO & MCA rules and statutory regulations

- There will be the requirement to live in Ho Chi Minh City.
- Furnished apartment accommodation with onsite gym and shared swimming pool is provided.
