Job description

Reporting to: Bosun / Launch Skipper

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group is seeking motivated and capable seafarers to join our fleet – which includes both workboats and larger vessels. This is a rotational role working 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off, with onboard accommodation and meals provided during duty periods.

Job Summary

As an Able Seafarer or Workboat Crewmember, you will play a key role in supporting vessel operations and ensuring the safe and efficient movement of freight for our customers. You will also be involved in passenger-facing duties, such as assisting with gangways and ticketing. This is a varied and physically demanding role that requires flexibility, teamwork, and a strong commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities

You will be assisting with the following (and other work as directed by your line manager):

  • Vessel mooring
  • Freight operations (including planning, crane operations, and securing)
  • Navigation
  • Vessel maintenance and upkeep (including dry-docking)
  • Passenger Operations
  • Forklift driving – this can sometimes be for extended periods

Skills and Knowledge

It is expected that you have a minimum basic knowledge of the following (however, training can be given):

  • Communications – including use of VHF and UHF radios.
  • Navigation and vessel handling – the ability to manoeuvre small workboats and check position using bridge equipment.
  • Mooring – using equipment and handling mooring ropes to secure vessels.
  • Safe cargo handling – assist in slinging of loads, crane operations.

Qualifications

  • Required
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn
    • Dedication and commitment to ‘Delivering for Scilly’
    • English and Maths to GCSE (or equivalent) grade C or 4.
    • MCA ENG1 medical (if not held, we will pay for this after a successful interview)
  • Preferred (but not essential – if you don’t hold these, please still apply):
    • All basic STCWs
    • Navigational Watch Rating Certificate
    • Able Seafarer (Deck) Certificate of Proficiency
    • Designated Security Duties
    • STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB)
    • Crane operator certification
    • Forklift operator certification
