Workboat skipper
Job description
As a Workboat Skipper you will be working to ensure that freight is moved for our customers, as required by the freight team; The role is demanding and varied, and may include trips between Isles of Scilly and the mainland. There will be times where you are operating independently, and times as part of a 2-person team.
You will have overall responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of a commercial workboat (up to 24 metres in length), run in accordance with our safety management system and Workboat Code 3 requirements.
Knowledge/Skills
It is expected that you have knowledge of the following:
- Navigation and vessel handling – the ability to navigate and manoeuvre the workboat safely and efficiently.
- Cargo work – working with cranes and securing of cargo onboard, including dangerous goods carriage.
- Isles of Scilly – local area knowledge of navigational requirements.

You will be expected to; appreciate the need for safety on board, be part of and lead the onboard team, carry out your duties as required by the safety management system, be able to work flexibly to the varying demands of the freight and vessel operation, be considerate to other crew members and to protect the environment from marine pollution wherever possible.
Qualifications
- RYA Powerboat Advanced or RYA Yachtmaster Coastal (+ Commercial Endorsement for either). Holders of other qualifications may also apply, as we may be able to accept RYA Day Skipper.
- MCA ENG1 medical (if not held, we will pay for this after a successful interview)
- Workboat Code 3 training (can be provided, if not held)
- STCW Basic Training
- Radar Training
