Scillonian IV reaches another important milestone
We’re pleased to share a further update on Scillonian IV, as our new passenger vessel takes another important step towards joining the service.
Following inspections and sea trials, Scillonian IV was technically accepted by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group on 7th October. This is an important milestone in the build programme, confirming that the vessel meets the requirements of the shipbuilding contract and specification.
Since construction began at Piriou’s shipyard in Vietnam in June 2024, the project team and shipbuilders have worked hard to bring the new vessel to this stage.
Scillonian IV is scheduled to leave Ho Chi Minh City on 31st October, beginning her two-month journey, via the Cape of Good Hope to Concarneau before her onwards journey to the UK. This is the same route taken by our freight vessel, Menawethan, earlier this year.
Before delivery, the vessel is expected to spend around three weeks at Piriou’s shipyard in Concarneau, France, where a final survey will take place. During this time, members of our technical team and crew will continue preparations, familiarise themselves with the new vessel and support the final stages of the delivery process. There will also be opportunities for additional crew members to join the ship for parts of the journey.
These are important steps in preparing both the vessel and her crew for the next stage, as we continue working towards bringing Scillonian IV into service.
Looking ahead to March 2027
We know how important it is for islanders, businesses, and visitors to be able to plan ahead, and we’re pleased to confirm that planning for Scillonian IV’s introduction in March 2027 continues to progress.
The 2027 sailing schedule has been prepared and is now going through its final stages of approval ahead of publication. We understand that many people are waiting for these dates, and we’ll share the schedule as soon as it has completed the approval process and is ready to be released.
Scillonian IV is part of our £40 million investment to support in the future of transport to the Isles of Scilly. With capacity for up to 600 passengers, the new 75-metre vessel will replace Scillonian III in March 2027, bringing improved capacity, comfort and facilities for passengers travelling between the islands and the mainland.
There are still important steps to complete before the new vessel enters service, but technical acceptance marks another significant milestone in the journey.
