We are seeking an experienced, proactive, and safety-focused Chief Officer to support the safe and efficient operation of Menawethan, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group’s newbuild lifeline freight vessel. Operating from Penzance on a 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off rotation, the Chief Officer is the vessel’s principal deck officer, responsible for leading freight operations, supervising deck crew, managing lifting arrangements, and acting as both Ship’s Safety Officer and Ship Security Officer.
The Chief Officer will play a key role in the introduction of Menawethan into service, including trials, familiarisation, and establishing safe operational routines. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring excellent deck management, ship-handling ability, and a strong focus on safety and compliance.
- Chief Mate Certificate of Competency (STCW II/2 – minimum 3000 GT, Near Coastal).
- Valid ENG1 medical certificate.
- Up-to-date STCW mandatory training, including required refreshers.
- Proficiency in Medical Care Onboard Ship, with valid refresher training.
- Experience in coastal or short-sea freight, cargo, or logistics operations.
- Experience with IMDG Code requirements for the acceptance, documentation, and carriage of dangerous goods.
- Experience supervising lifting operations, including LOLER compliance and lifting gear inspections.
- Familiarity with the introduction, commissioning, and refit of vessels.
- Strong digital competency across SMS, reporting systems, and PM systems.
- Ship Security Officer and Crisis Management training (or willingness to undertake).
- Proven ship-handling competence, including manoeuvring in tidal, confined, and weather-affected ports.
- Ambition and progression towards Master (II/2) is strongly encouraged and supported by the Company.
- Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.
