We are seeking an experienced and safety-driven Master to take command of Menawethan, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group’s newbuild lifeline freight vessel. Operating from Penzance on a 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off rotation, the Master holds absolute command of the vessel and carries overriding authority over all aspects of vessel operation. In any emergency, the Master or Officer in Charge shall take whatever action they judge necessary to protect life, property, and the environment.
This role involves leading the introduction of Menawethan into service, including berthing trials, acceptance, and the establishment of operational routines for the new vessel serving the Isles of Scilly. Menawethan is a cargo-led operation, and the Master will play a critical role in ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient handling of freight (including dangerous goods) in accordance with the IMDG Code, company policy, harbour regulations, and industry best practice.
- Master’s Certificate of Competency (STCW II/2 – Minimum 3000 GT, Near Coastal).
- Valid ENG1 medical certificate.
- Up-to-date STCW mandatory training, including refreshers where required.
- Proficiency in Medical Care Onboard Ship (with updated refresher).
- Experience in coastal or short-sea freight, cargo, or logistics operations.
- Experience with dangerous goods operations in accordance with the IMDG Code.
- Experience supervising lifting operations, including LOLER compliance and lifting gear control.
- Proven ship-handling skills in tidal, confined, and weather-affected ports.
- Experience commissioning or introducing new vessels into service.
- Strong digital competency across SMS, reporting systems, PM systems, and modern bridge technology.
- Ship Security Officer and Crisis Management training (or willingness to undertake).
